After practicing law for a short time, he obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy of law from the University of Bologna, Italy, with a thesis on expert evidence. During his postdoctoral research, he contributed to the Legal Theory and Cognitive Science Laboratory at the University of Bologna. He is part of the editorial team of the journals Ratio Juris, Diritto e Questioni Pubbliche, and Athena.

His main interests are the confusion between questions of fact and questions of law, expert evidence, the cognitive structure of legal concepts and the division of cognitive labour in law.
