J.D., Ph.D., is professor emeritus at the University of California, Irvine where he has held academic appointments in criminology, law, and psychological science.  He writes about inference, communication, and cognitive bias with a particular focus on forensic science.  He has served as a lawyer, expert witness and Special Master in litigation on the admissibility and weight of scientific evidence.  He served on the Forensic Science Standards Board (US), chaired the panel that drafted the AAAS report on Latent Fingerprint Analysis, served on the committee that drafted the Royal Statistical Society report on investigation of serial medical misconduct, and co-chairs an advisory committee for the Maryland Attorney General on assessing and addressing bias in medical examinations. His research has been supported by NSF, the NIJ, and NIST/CSAFE.
